We fight mosquitoes with mosquitoes

SMF is a Dallas company that controls mosquitoes biologically, with sterile male mosquitoes.

AI vision sorting conveyor in the lab
SMF (Sterile Mosquito Factory) is a Dallas, Texas company that reduces mosquito populations biologically, at the source, by releasing sterile male mosquitoes that don't bite. It's precisely targeted: it affects only the two mosquito species we release, and it's safe for people, pets, pollinators and the environment. We serve homes, businesses and public agencies across the whole Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and the towns around it, using AI sorting and release technology from our partner, Senecio.

Our mission

Fewer mosquitoes, with nothing left behind on lawns or water.

North Texas summers are long, and most mosquito control means treating the same yards, fairways and parks with chemicals every few weeks. We think there's a better default: stop the next generation from being born, and leave the bees, the pets and the ponds alone.

Why sterile males

Only female mosquitoes bite. Males feed on nectar.1 That simple fact makes a clean method possible.

The sterile insect technique (SIT) releases sterile males that mate with wild females. Those females lay eggs that don't hatch, so each generation is smaller than the last. Public programs have used SIT for more than 60 years,2 and US mosquito control districts have published results with the same method we use, including up to 79% fewer adult mosquitoes in one program's first release phase.3 Those are their results, not ours.

How our males are made

Every SMF program runs on the same four steps, and the males leave our facility ready to release.

1 Raise and sort We raise mosquitoes and remove the females, using AI vision from our technology partner, Senecio. Only males move on.
2 Sterilize We sterilize the males with X-rays in-house, the last step before they leave our facility.
3 Release At home, a release plate arrives twice a month in the warm months and one a month in winter, and takes about a minute to open. On commercial properties, our team or your own staff release on site.
4 Enjoy You should start to feel the difference within 7 to 14 days.
Why it works: wild females mate once. When one mates with a sterile male, her eggs don't hatch. Each generation is smaller than the last, until the population collapses. How it works →

Homes get a release plate twice a month in the warm months and one a month in winter. On commercial properties, our team can handle every release on site, or the property's staff can release the plates with our instructions. Our technology partner, Senecio, provides the AI vision that sorts males from females and the release systems behind it.

Honest about limits. Our releases reduce the species we release, the Asian tiger and yellow fever mosquitoes that bite in yards by day and at dusk. We say so up front.
Biological, without chemicals. Nothing on lawns, pool decks, fairways or ponds. Safe for people, pets, pollinators and the environment.
Properly regulated. No Texas pest-control license required, per the Texas Department of Agriculture. Regulation details, with sources, are on our safety page.
On your side. Straight answers, and no scare stories about mosquitoes.

FAQ

What does SMF stand for?
Sterile Mosquito Factory. We raise and release sterile male mosquitoes to reduce mosquito populations at the source.
Where is SMF based?
Dallas, Texas. We serve the whole Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and the towns around it. Outside it, we work through pilots with cities and districts and through partners.
Who is SMF's technology partner?
Senecio, an Israeli company that builds AI sorting and release systems for the sterile insect technique. SMF is an independent US company, and no customer data is shared with Senecio.
Are your mosquitoes genetically modified?
No. The males are not genetically modified. They are sterilized with a measured X-ray dose, like a medical X-ray, after the females are removed. The CDC confirms irradiated mosquitoes are not genetically modified.
