Sterile mosquito control in Fort Worth

Biological mosquito control for Fort Worth, gentle on pets, bees and the creek out back.

SMF offers Fort Worth homes and properties sterile male mosquito releases: biological control, chemical-free and safe for pets, bees and the Trinity. The program works on the container-breeding biters around homes near the river, its trails and the west side's shady streets.

SMF's releases target the biters in yards by day and at dusk (Asian tiger and yellow fever mosquitoes). They don't affect night-biting mosquitoes.

There's plenty of backyard here. The Trinity Trails follow the river and its forks through the city, and the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge covers more than 3,600 acres around Lake Worth and the West Fork. Green, shady and wet is what mosquitoes like too, especially in planters, gutters and thick shrubs that are easy to miss.

Fort Worth has historically focused on education, prevention and draining standing water, with spraying kept to targeted areas around positive traps. Check the city's site for current policy and notices. Tarrant County Public Health tests the region's mosquito samples and publishes a weekly surveillance report in season. Alongside night-biting mosquitoes, its traps count the Asian tiger and yellow fever mosquitoes, the daytime biters a sterile male program targets.

Four steps to fewer mosquitoes

1 Raise and sort We raise mosquitoes and remove the females, using AI vision from our technology partner, Senecio. Only males move on.
2 Sterilize We sterilize the males with X-rays in-house, the last step before they leave our facility.
3 Release A release plate arrives twice a month in the warm months and one a month in winter. Follow the instructions and open it in your yard. It takes about a minute.
4 Enjoy You should start to feel the difference within 7 to 14 days.
Why it works: wild females mate once. When one mates with a sterile male, her eggs don't hatch. Each generation is smaller than the last, until the population collapses. How it works →

FAQ: Fort Worth

Is it safe for my dog and the fish pond?
Yes. Nothing goes on the lawn or into the water, and the males we release don't bite, so the dog and the fish carry on as usual.
I live near the Trinity River. Will sterile males help?
They help with the container-breeding biters around homes, the ones that find you on the patio. River and pond mosquitoes are often other species, so keep dumping standing water too.
When is mosquito season in Fort Worth?
Usually from spring through fall, with peaks during warm, wet spells; the county's weekly reports run through the season. A program covers the whole year, with one plate a month in winter.
