Sterile mosquito control in Southlake

Biological mosquito control for Southlake homes and estates, with pools, gardens and horses in mind.

Horse grazing beside a red barn

SMF offers Southlake homes and estates sterile male mosquito releases: biological control, chemical-free on lawns, pastures and ponds. On larger lots, the program is planned around the whole property, from the pool to the barn.

SMF's releases target the biters in yards by day and at dusk (Asian tiger and yellow fever mosquitoes). They don't affect night-biting mosquitoes.

Larger Southlake lots come with pools, gardens, mature trees and, for some, horses and ponds. On the north side, the Bob Jones Nature Center and Preserve covers about 758 acres beside Lake Grapevine, with more than 20 miles of trails. It's beautiful country to be outside in, and on a big property the program covers ground nobody walks: tree holes, gutters and dense brush.

Southlake sets mosquito traps around the city, and Tarrant County Public Health tests the samples and lists Southlake's results by name in its weekly surveillance report. After a positive result, the city sprays within about a half-mile of the trap over several nights, with notices on the city's news site. In 2019, the city also piloted stocking an isolated neighborhood pond with mosquito-eating fish.

Four steps to fewer mosquitoes

1 Raise and sort We raise mosquitoes and remove the females, using AI vision from our technology partner, Senecio. Only males move on.
2 Sterilize We sterilize the males with X-rays in-house, the last step before they leave our facility.
3 Release A release plate arrives twice a month in the warm months and one a month in winter. Follow the instructions and open it in your yard. It takes about a minute.
4 Enjoy You should start to feel the difference within 7 to 14 days.
Why it works: wild females mate once. When one mates with a sterile male, her eggs don't hatch. Each generation is smaller than the last, until the population collapses. How it works →

What public programs have measured

Evidence for the method, not SMF's own results.

Six weeks in Texas 93% fewer wild female mosquitoes after six weeks in a Harris County, Texas study (related method).1
First phase in Florida 79% fewer adult mosquitoes and 59% fewer eggs in the first release phase, compared with an untreated island.2
A district in California 44% / 65% fewer female mosquitoes: 44% with sterile males alone, 65% combined with larvicide stations.3

FAQ: Southlake

Is sterile male mosquito control safe around horses and livestock?
Yes. Male mosquitoes don't bite people or animals, and water troughs, pastures and barns are left untouched.
My Southlake lot is over an acre. Does that change the program?
It can change how many release plates you get and where your instructions tell you to open them. The method stays the same. Every program is quoted for the property, so your quote reflects the size of your lot.
Will released males reach the wooded parts of my lot?
Yes, they fly into dense brush and the property next door on their own. They don't reach every mosquito, and night-biting mosquitoes aren't affected.
When is mosquito season in Southlake?
Like the rest of North Texas, roughly spring into late fall, with peaks after summer rain. Lakeside and wooded lots can stay active late in the season, which is one reason programs here run year-round, with fewer plates through the mild winter.
