SMF serves Irving and Las Colinas homes, offices and hotels with sterile male mosquito releases: biological control, chemical-free and safe for guests, tenants and pets. It works alongside the city's trapping program, on the daytime biters near patios, courtyards and canals.

SMF's releases target the biters in yards by day and at dusk (Asian tiger and yellow fever mosquitoes). They don't affect night-biting mosquitoes.

Irving has a lot of water close to where people live and work. The Campion Trail follows the Elm Fork and West Fork of the Trinity River, and in Las Colinas, Lake Carolyn and the Mandalay Canal sit right beside offices, hotels and apartments. For hotels and restaurant patios there, a program means no chemicals, no smell and nothing for guests to notice, with the focus on planters, drains and courtyard corners.

Irving runs an active mosquito program. The city sets traps to see which species are present, treats water that can't be drained and, when traps test positive or counts run higher than normal, sends trucks out overnight for spraying near those traps. The city hands out free mosquito dunks (Bti) for standing water at recreation centers and City Hall.

Four steps to fewer mosquitoes

1 Raise and sort We raise mosquitoes and remove the females, using AI vision from our technology partner, Senecio. Only males move on.
2 Sterilize We sterilize the males with X-rays in-house, the last step before they leave our facility.
3 Release A release plate arrives twice a month in the warm months and one a month in winter. Follow the instructions and open it in your yard. It takes about a minute.
4 Enjoy You should start to feel the difference within 7 to 14 days.
Why it works: wild females mate once. When one mates with a sterile male, her eggs don't hatch. Each generation is smaller than the last, until the population collapses. How it works →

The city sets traps at residents' request. Contact the city's mosquito hotline to ask. It's a good way to see what's flying in your area.

Yes. Patios, pool decks and courtyards are a good fit, with no chemicals near guests or tenants. Resort and hotel programs →
Is it safe near Lake Carolyn and the canals?
Yes. Releases put nothing in the water, so lakes, canals and fountains need no special handling.
When is mosquito season in Irving?
Roughly spring through fall, with the busiest stretch in the hot, wet months of summer. Programs keep going through the cooler months, so the busy season starts from a low base.
