Sterile mosquito control in Dallas

Biological mosquito control for Dallas yards, from the Park Cities to the Trinity corridor.

SMF serves Dallas homes and properties with sterile male mosquito releases: biological control that's chemical-free and safe for people, pets and pollinators. It works on the biters in your yard by day and at dusk, so the local population shrinks with each generation.

SMF's releases target the biters in yards by day and at dusk (Asian tiger and yellow fever mosquitoes). They don't affect night-biting mosquitoes.

Dallas mixes tree-lined older neighborhoods with creek corridors, from the Great Trinity Forest along the Trinity River and White Rock Creek to the backyards a few blocks off them. Shade and water close to home is where the daytime biters do best, in clogged gutters, storm drains and dense shrubs.

Dallas Code Compliance traps and tests mosquitoes, treats standing water and ground sprays in response to trap results. Residents who'd rather opt out can join the city's Do Not Ground Spray list through 311, renewed every season. Across the county, Dallas County Health and Human Services monitors mosquito samples from April through mid-November and posts trap results on its arbovirus surveillance page. A sterile male program at home works alongside all of it.

Four steps to fewer mosquitoes

1 Raise and sort We raise mosquitoes and remove the females, using AI vision from our technology partner, Senecio. Only males move on.
2 Sterilize We sterilize the males with X-rays in-house, the last step before they leave our facility.
3 Release A release plate arrives twice a month in the warm months and one a month in winter. Follow the instructions and open it in your yard. It takes about a minute.
4 Enjoy You should start to feel the difference within 7 to 14 days.
Why it works: wild females mate once. When one mates with a sterile male, her eggs don't hatch. Each generation is smaller than the last, until the population collapses. How it works →

First phase in Florida 79% fewer adult mosquitoes and 59% fewer eggs in the first release phase, compared with an untreated island.2
A district in California 44% / 65% fewer female mosquitoes: 44% with sterile males alone, 65% combined with larvicide stations.3

FAQ: Dallas

Is it safe for kids, dogs and a backyard pond in Dallas?
Yes. Male mosquitoes don't bite, and nothing goes on the lawn or into the water, so kids and dogs use the yard as usual.
Will it help if my Dallas home backs onto a creek or greenbelt?
For the daytime biters breeding in containers around homes, yes, including the ones next door. River and creek mosquitoes are often other species, so keep tipping out standing water too.
When is mosquito season in Dallas?
Roughly spring into late fall, with the biggest numbers after summer rain; the county monitors from April through mid-November. Starting before populations build in late spring gives a program a head start, and releases continue through Dallas's mild winter at one plate a month.
Do you serve Highland Park, University Park and Lake Highlands?
We serve every Dallas ZIP code, including the Park Cities.
