Sterile mosquito control in Plano

Biological mosquito control for Plano homes, HOAs and greenbelts, alongside the city's program.

SMF provides sterile male mosquito releases for Plano homes, HOAs and businesses: biological control, chemical-free and safe for families, pets and pollinators. It complements the city's trap-and-respond program by working on the daytime biters in yards and common areas.

SMF's releases target the biters in yards by day and at dusk (Asian tiger and yellow fever mosquitoes). They don't affect night-biting mosquitoes.

Plano's green spaces are a big part of the appeal, from Oak Point Park and Nature Preserve, the city's largest park at about 800 acres along Rowlett Creek, to Arbor Hills Nature Preserve on the west side, with nearly 100 miles of shared-use paths linking neighborhoods in between. Creeks, canopy and irrigated lawns give mosquitoes plenty to work with, from irrigation boxes to the yard over the fence.

Plano's Environmental Health and Sustainability team runs a trap-and-test program across the city through the warm months. When a trap comes back positive, crews spray within about a half-mile of it, usually overnight, and notices go out through the city. The city also treats standing water.

Four steps to fewer mosquitoes

1 Raise and sort We raise mosquitoes and remove the females, using AI vision from our technology partner, Senecio. Only males move on.
2 Sterilize We sterilize the males with X-rays in-house, the last step before they leave our facility.
3 Release A release plate arrives twice a month in the warm months and one a month in winter. Follow the instructions and open it in your yard. It takes about a minute.
4 Enjoy You should start to feel the difference within 7 to 14 days.
Why it works: wild females mate once. When one mates with a sterile male, her eggs don't hatch. Each generation is smaller than the last, until the population collapses. How it works →

What public programs have measured

Evidence for the method, not SMF's own results.

Six weeks in Texas 93% fewer wild female mosquitoes after six weeks in a Harris County, Texas study (related method).1
First phase in Florida 79% fewer adult mosquitoes and 59% fewer eggs in the first release phase, compared with an untreated island.2
A district in California 44% / 65% fewer female mosquitoes: 44% with sterile males alone, 65% combined with larvicide stations.3

FAQ: Plano

Is sterile male mosquito control safe around Plano pools and ponds?
Yes. Nothing is applied to water, lawns or play areas, so the pool stays open and fish are unaffected.
Can my Plano HOA use sterile males on common areas?
Yes. Greenbelts, pools and trails are a good fit, and covering the whole neighborhood strengthens the effect. HOA programs →
When is mosquito season in Plano?
The city traps through the warm months, which is a fair guide: spring into fall, busiest in summer. Our programs don't stop when the city's trapping does: one plate a month over winter keeps Plano yards ahead going into spring.
I back onto a creek in Plano. Is it still worth it?
For the daytime biters breeding in yards nearby, yes. We'll look at your lot and tell you what to expect.
